Blood Flow Restriction Therapy

Hosted by the OPTA and the Western District of the OPTA

Course Description:

Various muscular adaptations occur with aging &/or injury.  These adaptations create a variety of issues in the application of current strength training guidelines related to load, intensity, and frequency in these populations.  Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is a novel method that may be able to help therapists address these issues.  This course will describe the history, purpose, proposed mechanisms, and safety behind BFR as well as methodologic concerns and recommendations regarding the practical application of BFR in rehabilitation.  Additionally, this course will review recent literature related to the use of BFR for rehabilitation in various patient populations and present the theoretical benefit for the use of BFR in patient populations yet to be studied.
