“Medicare/TrailBlazer Part B Regulations, Reimbursement & Documentation for Physical Therapy” (7 Contact Hours)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The presentation is open to PT’s PTA’s and office staff. The course will focus on understanding the Medicare Administrative Contract changes, documentation, audits, and appeals, and recertification processes. Participants are asked to bring questions as this course will be interactive with opportunities to get your questions answered.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
· Understand the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) changes and its impact on PT Services in Oklahoma (J4-Part B MAC)
· Be acquainted with TrailBlazer’s resources, methodologies and services
· Know & and be able to access and utilize TrailBlazer’s Local Coverage Determination including, but not limited to:
à Indications & Limitations of Coverage for Medical Necessity
à General Physical Medicine Guidelines
¨ General Modality Guidelines
¨ General Procedure Guidelines
¨ Utilization Guidelines
¨ Limited Coverage Edits (Crosswalk) issues
· Know how to adjust his/her Plan of Care recertification times
· Update and/or enhance his/her knowledge regarding CMS documentation requirements and justification of Medical Necessity, including:
à Evaluation/Re-evaluation
à Plan of Care
à Progress Reports/Discharge Summary Reports
à Treatment Encounter Notes
à Standardized Testing and Outcome Measurement Tools
· Be acquainted with the new PT/PTA qualifications and effective dates
· Understand Medicare audits, auditors and appeals process
FACULTY: Mary Daulong, PT, CHC has a very diverse physical therapy practice background which includes private practice ownership, corporate managed services and hospital based services approximating four decades. Her consulting company was established in 1985 and has been, for the past eight years, 100% dedicated to working with rehab professionals in the areas of federal and state compliance, practice and business office operations, coding/reimbursement, documentation and policy and procedure manual production. She is the only PT certified in Health Care Compliance in the United States and has been so since 2002. Mary serves on the APTA's Risk Management & Members Benefits Committee and also on its State Reimbursement Committee; she is chair of the TPTA Reimbursement Committee is a member on the Private Practice Reimbursement Task Force/Committee and is the co-chair the APTA's Ad Hoc Committee on matters related to Trailblazer and its providers.
Gail Atnip has been employed by TrailBlazer Health Enterprises, LLC and has worked in the Medicare Part B division since 1978 and holds the current position of Provider Outreach and Education Specialist where she has served providers for the past 10 years. Her specialties are Ambulance and Physical Medicine. She has held various positions in the Medicare Part B division including beneficiary and provider customer service and telephone and written appeals. She has extensive background with Medicare policies and claims processing.
“Overview and Advancements in Prosthetics and Orthotics” (7 Contact Hours)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to educate the PT community of Oklahoma on the subjects of orthotics and prosthetics, generally. More specifically, the coverage of new devices will enhance the PTs understanding of how nascent technologies are changing people’s lives for the better. We hope to achieve a working relationship with the PTs throughout the state—as this will aid in our service to the patients we both serve!
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
· Overview of Orthotic patient care
· Detailed understanding of new technology related to the condition known more commonly as foot drop
· Overview of Prosthetic patient care
· Understand the benefits of Microprocessor Knee Technology and who is a viable candidate
· Understand the recent developments in Upper Extremity Prosthetics and who is a viable candidate
FACULTY: Richard Foster, BSME, CO, BEP has been a practitioner since 2003. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1989 and completed the Certificate Programs for Orthotics and Prosthetics from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago in 2003. He is an American Board of Certification for Prosthetics and Orthotics certified Orthotist and Board Eligible Prosthetist. As an experienced practitioner of orthotics and prosthetics with a background in manufacturing engineering, he specializes in complex solutions that incorporate the best technological solutions available for patients with ambulatory and non-ambulatory functional needs. Specific areas of interest and training are as follows: Insignia Scan-ning Technology, Stance Control Orthotics, Hanger Comfort Flex Socket System, C-Leg Certification, Harmony Vacuum System Certification, and Cascade DAFO Training.
Kevin Hill, CPO has been involved in Prosthetics and Orthotics since the age of 15. After graduating from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics in 1987, he entered clinical practice. His practice has varied from being a staff Orthotist working with patients with cerebral palsy with traditional metal and leather orthotic systems to managing a large multi-disciplinary practice with an emphasis on lower extremity Prosthetics. In the early 1990's, Kevin managed a clinical practice in a University setting and devoted many hours to the orthotic fitting and management of acutely injured cervical spine patients with an orthosis developed specifically for that Hospital. With a special interest in lower extremity prosthetics, Kevin has worked extensively with microprocessor knees and their applications for patients of various functional levels. He has lectured on various topics relating to rehabilitation, O&P technology and patient management and is a firm believer in the team approach to physical rehabilitation.
Chuck Anderson, CP, LP has been a clinician since 1982 and a technician for five years before that. He graduated from Lakewood College in Minnesota in 1981. He held the position of Chief Prosthetist at Ranch Los Amigos Medical Center in Los Angeles in the late 80’s. Currently he is practicing at Hanger P&O in Oklahoma City as Hanger’s regional Upper Extremity Specialist. He has held that position since 1996. His specialty takes him out of the office frequently to attend other clinics and to support or complete Upper Extremity fittings. He is experienced in high level and bilateral involvements and has many highly active patients, many of whom have returned to the work force and are very appreciative. Chuck lectures and educates about his specialty and provides continuing education to allied health personnel.
Michael Harrington, CP has been a prosthetist since 1993 after making a career change from architecture. He did his prosthetic studies at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and is currently the practice manager for a Hanger office in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He makes and fits both upper and lower extremity prosthetics at all levels on pediatrics to geriatrics. He has given courses on all aspects of upper and lower extremity prosthetics including fit, alignment, gait deviations, and technological advancements.
“Is this Job a Good Fit: Ethical Distress in the Workplace” (3 Contact Hours)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course discusses the concept of ethical distress and the resulting self-deceptive behaviors. Ethical distress involves situations in which PTs and PTAs cannot fulfill their ethical obligations or fail to live up to their own expectations in ethical practice. It is important that we recognize the distress signals and employ strategies for possible resolution to the problems before we practice in unethical and/or illegal ways.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion, participants will be able to
· Understand the term ethical distress and the self-deceptive behaviors
· Define their personal value system and develop a personal mission
· Develop strategies to employ to resolve ethical distress
· Evaluate and discuss case studies involving ethical distress using the APTA Code of Ethics and the OK State Practice Act.
· Develop strategies to choose ethical employment compatible with their own value system.
· Reflect on benefit packages…how do they impact ethical business practices .
FACULTY: Suzanne Reese, PT, MS is currently the Program Director for the Tulsa Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program. Suzanne has been very active in the APTA, serving as both the Chief Delegate and President of the Oklahoma Chapter. She is currently a member of the PTA Panel for the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. Suzanne has taught Contemporary Medical Ethics and Law & Ethics for Medical Careers at Tulsa Community College and has presented courses on ethics throughout Oklahoma.
